Riudoso was a huge dissappointment fro me too. Next time do the extra time and head for Taos, or at least Tres Ritos. I know it's an extra five or six hours, but i promise it's worth it.

Thanks for the story,
die fische

Re: If I drown out the smell, Barton Creek is like being on an East Coast trout stream

That's a Texas Cichlid or a Rio Grande Perch. It's native to southern Texas and is the northern-most Cichlid. Turns out that it is a pretty common aquarium fish. It's pretty cool to catch one. That one in the picture was the first one I've caught.

Re: If I drown out the smell, Barton Creek is like being on an East Coast trout stream

Thats a cool looking fish. What is it? I'm mostly a saltwater guy and am always amazed when I see colors like that come out of a small freshwater stream.

Re: Reimers Ranch visit - Family Time

i just moved to Austin and was quite disappointed w/ the fly fishing opportunities here. Then I read your blog and like you, i became addicted to fly fishing about 5 years ago when i was in law school. I tried fishing Reimer's Ranch this morning but found that the water was very brown and discolored. Also, the TPW gal at the gate said the water was running fast due to the rains. I didn't get to do much fishing but found the area beautiful. Please tell me the water clears up eventually :)
On the drive home to i spotted the Barton creek overpass i think you refer to in your blog. Is that the spot I should try????? Your pictures are very inspiring and I hope you might be able to give some direction as to any decent places to fly fish. Thanks for some good reading.

Stephenrod

Re: If I drown out the smell, Barton Creek is like being on an East Coast trout stream

Water stays in the deep pools year round, at least the ones on that map linked to above. They got incredibly small this year though with pools that are normally three to four feet deep getting down to one or two feet. Right now is the perfect time to be down there though. And remember there is a lot of Barton Creek out there. That Lost Creek area on the map just happens to be where i spend most of my time, although i did find a section recently that is new to me and just as beautiful. Check it out at

http://diefische.wordpress.com/2009/10/09/troll...

Re: If I drown out the smell, Barton Creek is like being on an East Coast trout stream

Thanks. Very nice maps btw. I'm pretty happy to "rediscover" it. I drive right by it on my way home from work so I'm hoping to get to know it much better. Does water stay in it year round?

Re: If I drown out the smell, Barton Creek is like being on an East Coast trout stream

Check this out for a detailed map of the areas to hit on BartonCreek. It can be a lot of fun, you just have to know where to be.

http://diefische.wordpress.com/austin-ff-introd...

Re: Headwater Rod back in commission

I did see that table at the FF Film Fest, but didn't stop by for some reason. So far, it's very entertaining. It would make a good short film.

Re: Headwater Rod back in commission

I think you're gonna like Alaska Chronicles. i bought my copy at the FF Film Fest when it was in Austin from Miles. Fly tying is a good alternative that I need to start back up but I don't enjoy tying warm water flies as much as cold water. Think I need to take a trip soon.

Re: Pedernales River water level and fishing report

Man. Pretty depressing isn't it. This summer has really been crushing as far as water goes. I've even started fly tying this last week, 30 years before i thought i would, in an effort to keep from going stir crazy.

Re: Pedernales River water level and fishing report

No, not common to dry up every summer. We've had a horrible summer with no rain and I think 70 or 80 days over 100 degrees F. It happens periodically but this summer is much worse than normal.

Re: Pedernales River water level and fishing report

I am sorry to read that!
